Brief Action Planning is a highly structured, patient-centered and evidence informed model based on the principles and practice of Motivational Interviewing (MI). It is a structured way of having a conversation with someone who is interested in turning their hopes for healthy behaviours into concrete plans. The core skills can be used by anyone interested in supporting others to make change.

Participants are required to complete at least 2 practice feedback calls of 1 hour each, in order to receive a completion certificate.

BAP Practice call times availability: *to be booked with facilitator during the workshop

Friday, February 14 : 12 noon-1:00pm
Wednesday, February 19: 11:00am-noon
Wednesday, February 19: 12 noon-1:00pm
Wednesday, February 19: 4:00-5:00pm
Thursday, February 20: 4:30-5:30pm

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe the Spirit of MI in health behavior change
  • Utilize three core questions during patient visits
  • Demonstrate and receive feedback on 5 core skills for facilitating patient centered action planning

Brief Action Planning (BAP) addresses many of the barriers providers have cited to providing self-management support. It can be used routinely by both individual providers and health care teams to facilitate patient-centered goal setting, action planning and to build self-efficacy in chronic disease management and prevention.

This day course is fully virtual via Zoom meeting. It will provide health care providers with an opportunity to learn specific, brief, and efficient communication strategies and skills that can be used during medical appointments.

It is designed to familiarize you with the literature, theory and techniques for promoting change in health behaviour and supporting self-management in patients.

Why should I take the workshop?

  • Learn how to assess patients’ confidence and commitment to engage in health behaviour change
  • Learn skills to influence change in patients’ health behaviours
  • Learn techniques to use in clinical settings to promote adherence to treatment plans and encourage follow-up for reflection, reassurance and next steps.

Workshop format

  • mini lectures
  • interactive exercises
  • videotaped case studies
  • skill practice with peers
