1:00pm - 3:30pm
Self-Management Program of Southeastern Ontario
This workshop is online only.

This workshop has 4 remaining seat(s).

FREE workshop helps to actively achieve best health & wellness, and provides a greater sense of control over life with cancer.

This is a 6 week online class, once a week on Monday afternoons from 1:00pm to 3:30pm, from October 18 to November 29. Please note there will be no class November 15. **Please note that anyone registering after October 15, 1:30pm will be receiving their materials 1 to 3 days late. Although ideal, the book is not 100% necessary to have on hand during the first session.**

This workshop will be offered via Zoom Meeting. You will need to download the software, but it is free and you do not need an account. You can choose to share your video image or not.

There will also be a 15-30 minute Zoom Meeting orientation session on Tuesday, October 12 at 11:00 am (session is required if you are not familiar with Zoom, and highly recommended even if you are). If you are not able to make the time, a one-on-one orientation session can be scheduled by contacting Danielle at 613-484-8072 or [email protected]

Because of the way that we are funded, priority will be given to those living in Southeastern Ontario. About a week or two before the workshop starts, any leftover seats will then be available to those who live elsewhere in Ontario.

Organized in partnership with the Cancer Care Centre of Southeastern Ontario.

The Cancer: Thriving and Surviving Workshop helps individuals gain skills, resources and confidence to better manage their health and daily life. This FREE, six-week workshop helps people to actively achieve their best health and wellness, as well as provides them with a greater sense of control over life with cancer.

This workshop is for adults who live with cancer, are survivors, and/or their family, friends or caregivers. Participants meet in a virtual group of 5 to 15 individuals via Zoom Meeting for 2.5 hours, once a week for 6 weeks, and will also receive a free copy of the book Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions and the audio CD Relaxation for Mind and Body (These will be shipped directly to you in advance, or electronic versions may also be emailed to you.). The workshops are led by two trained leaders who are usually volunteers who have lived with or been otherwise affected by cancer themselves.

Participants report improvement in their lifestyle and general health, as well as improved symptom management and better communication with their doctors. They also spend less time in the hospital compared to those who have not taken the workshop.

This workshop is an evidence-based self-management program originally developed at Stanford University and currently supported by the Self-Management Resource Center.

Subjects taught:

  • Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain, isolation, poor sleep and living with uncertainty
  • Appropriate exercise for regaining and maintaining flexibility, and endurance
